Sir: Yesterday I was going on the Canal Bank Road to drop a friend at the Ferozepur Road, Lahore, who was going back to Multan. On the way, one young boy was indulging in ‘one-wheeling’ while his friend was sitting on the back seat of the motorbike. All of a sudden, their motorbike slipped and both of them fell on the road. As we stopped the car, a car coming just behind us hit our car hard, which in turn was hit by a van. We were evaluating the damage done to our vehicles when those two boys slipped away unnoticed from the scene after causing the accident. The car that banged into ours was badly damaged with both the rearview and the windscreen smashed to bits. There are frequent accidents occurring on the Canal Road because of rash driving, overspeeding and not maintaining suitable distance between two vehicles. This is unfortunate that we as a nation have very little traffic sense and people feel pride in violating traffic rules. Just look at any traffic jam: everyone seems to be in a hurry, but wastes hours stuck in traffic instead of driving according to the traffic rules. My suggestion is that there must be a complete ban on one-wheeling as it risks the lives of people and such miscreants be booked and fined heavily for endangering public safety. Moreover, there should be speed cameras at the Canal Bank Road to supervise and maintain distance between vehicles. FAROOQ BASHIR BUTT Lahore
