Sir: The floods in 2012 proved to be the worst ever in lower Sindh. Badin is amongst the worst hit areas, including the other 16 districts. The flood had brought devastation to large parts of Sindh, killing more than 347 people, thousands of livestock, destroying 422,034 houses, inundating hundreds of thousands of acres of standing crops, completely destroying agriculture, crops and infrastructure. The small khatedars, farmers and landowners get the money to buy seeds, DAP, urea, diesel or petrol from loaning banks or at times on collateral from big shop owners. Though the farmer is still in shock, banks and shopkeepers have started demanding the loans back, thus adding to the miseries of the people The banks have also arrested some farmers pressuring them to pay off the loans on time. It is very disappointing on the part of the authorities to show such callousness at this time of distress and misery, as 17 districts have already been declared calamity-hit areas. The government must come forward to remit all bank loans and provide relief to the poor farmers. FAYAZ HUSSAIN ABRO Via e-mail
