Sir: The tragic death of Fakhra Younis, the acid victim, has failed to persuade our parliament to get the acid control and Acid Crime Prevention Bill 2010 ramped up for action. According to the authorities, it could take as long as two years to implement this new legislation. The irony is that the law enforcement agencies have still not been provided with the details of the law and its implementation procedure. The fact of the matter is that violence against women is on the rise, with the number of acid throwing incidents going up by 38 percent since last year. The fact that Fakhra’s attacker, former MPA Bilal Khar, used his political influence to evade punishment due to the silence of the law on the atrocities committed on her, should act as a catalyst for the authorities to speed up the implementation process of the bill so that the country is free of such inhumane acts against women.
