Sir: When we talk about education, most people think that it is just about getting a degree so you can have a job and support a family, but education is so much more than that. It is about being able to distinguish between right/wrong and act upon it, to be wise, dignified and truthful in one’s performance and to have the mindset that only an ‘educated’ person deserves to be called literate in the true sense of the word. All this needs to be taught and literally fed to our present and coming generations to purify our nation of corruption, target killing, extortion and other ills. For those who have not given this a thought, they must do so soon. Though literacy literally means “a person who is able to read and write” but that is just the literal meaning. In fact, there is so much more to it. I being a student of Media Studies see many high achieving students in all universities lacking moral values. They cheat, fool others, make friends for benefits and offer bribes, even threaten a teacher just to get good grades. They may say they have obtained a degree and deserve to be called educated, but to me they are still illiterate. Parents need to encourage their children to get a good education but it is also important to lay a great deal of importance on moral character building. After all, they are our present and future.
