Sir: We should be proud of National Highway Authority (NHA) for introducing an innovative way to control the culture of bribes and commissions in its department. All high-level officers in regional and construction units have been asked to sign an oath. The oath is meant to keep the officer or whosoever is the signatory from taking a bribe or commission from any contractor, the negation of the oath bringing Allah’s curse on him. We expect that after signing the oath, the bribery and commission culture will make an exit from NHA, and the government will save millions of rupees. The NHA has taken care of religious sensitivities and quite rightly replaced the word Allah with the alternative such as Baghwan, to take the non-Muslim officers on board as well. Let’s wait for the results of this glorious act. If successful, the same could be adopted in the police, revenue, judiciary, income tax, customs and other federal and provincial government departments. Good luck to the NHA for leading the country to a bribe and commission-free society. MASOOD KHAN Saudi Arabia
