Sir: According to a reliable English national daily (April 11, 2011), the Vice Chancellor of the University of Peshawar (UoP), Dr Azmat Hayat, has resigned for unknown reasons. Dr Qibla Ayaz has already been performing as the acting vice chancellor of the university for than a month. Dr Ayaz is likely to take charge as a full-fledged VC in the near future. If he takes over as VC, he needs to pay immediate attention to the problems faced by the university. Examination results in most cases are delayed. Sometimes students wait for their results for more than seven months. Invigilation duties are assigned to selected teachers of the university and colleges. The university and different government colleges in Peshawar have many competent, honest teachers but only a few blue-eyed ones are appointed in examinations as superintendents, deputy superintendents, and invigilators. Many of these teachers conduct examinations with the connivance of the controller of the UoP. Likewise, selected cliques of ‘professionals’ are appointed to check examination papers to earn thousands in return. The governor, as chancellor of the university, is kindly requested to get the details from the current controller of the UoP on the above issues and resolve them on a priority basis.
