Sir: Filthy stinking water spewing out of the sewers and running on the streets is a common sight in Karachi. The low-lying areas are especially hard-hit by this problem, causing traffic jams and of course, multiple diseases. People going to mosques for prayers find it hard to walk through the sewerage water and usually cancel going for their religious obligation, fearing impurity. The same is true for school and college going students who usually get late owing to traffic jams. In the face of epidemics like dengue and malaria, the situation should have caused alarm for the concerned authorities. Only if our leaders were serious about their basic duty, which is looking after the welfare of the people of their constituency, such problems could be solved in no time. It is just a matter of getting down to the job with good intentions. SANA SARFRAZ Karachi
