Sir: One of the most serious problems impeding the economic growth of Pakistan is undoubtedly the ineffectiveness of tax collection. As a result, the appalling nine percent tax-to-GDP ratio of Pakistan forces the government to take detrimental steps to narrow the fiscal deficit. Unless the taxpayer’s money is used to bring benefit and relief to the public, motivating people to give taxes would remain an elusive effort. Similarly, we need to redefine tax policies as well as the tax collection mechanism so that more people could be brought into the tax net. SARAH HAKEEM Karachi
