Sir: The idea of more provinces make sense. A federation demands power sharing at all levels. A relatively smaller and manageable province has more chances of good governance. However, the way the Pakistan People’s Party is pursuing this goal, it seems to be a revengeful act. The way Mr Zardari spoke about the creation of a Saraiki province during his recent visit to Multan and demanded a special bank of the same name to be developed; it reeked of the resentment he carries for the Sharif brothers. On top of that, he persuaded southerners to take up arms if their demand is not met. When the president of a country promotes violent solutions and an ethnic divide, who else would refrain from using these sentiments to divide the people? The president is supposed to be the symbol of the federation. At this point of time when Pakistan is coming apart at its seams, it is the duty of our president to keep ethnic sentiments under control. Unfortunately, hunger for power and bad politics has played its dirty game to make Pakistan once again a place that could never have peace and harmony. ALYA ALVI Rawalpindi
