Sir: My recent encounter with the Accountant General (AG) Punjab came as a fresh breeze, carrying the message of change and hope. Work in Pakistan is mired by two evils: rework and delays. In managerial jargon, this is called lack of efficiency. I have been an old government employee. A few of my salary bills were pending with the government and I had been going to the AG office Punjab for months to get those cleared. When I ran out of patience with the delaying tactics of the officials at the AG office, I decided to write an email to the AG Punjab. Surprisingly, the AG not only took notice of my issue but also expedited the release of my arrears. We have seen pensioners running from pillar to post for their pensions and how due to sheer delay and misplaced priorities of government departments, the poor souls suffered. Some even died on roads for lack of proper facilities. If only we could have more officers at the helm of every government department of the likes of the AG Punjab, this country could become a beacon of hope once again. FAROOQ BASHIR BUTT Lahore
