Sir: This is about a very sensitive issue, which has been affecting our society. When Pakistan came into existence after a long struggle, people sacrificed their lives, properties and honour just for one land and one exclusive identity. Even at that time, they had their ethnic identities, but they used to feel proud of their national identity — Pakistan. Unfortunately, today the nation has been divided into many nations, castes, races and classes and each one of these thinks of itself as a nation. After six decades, our ethnic belonging has divided us. We recognise each other by language and race and forget that we all belong to a land called Pakistan. For their particular interests, even politicians play the ‘ethnicity card’. We have started hating each other so much and our opposition to each other has become so fierce that ethnic riots have destroyed the peace of our country. It is the need of the hour that we understand that everyone who was born here and holds a national identity card belongs to Pakistan and should be called a Pakistani. We should also be proud of our one identity because ethnic politics have already caused immeasurable loss to our homeland. It is the responsibility of each one of us that we should spread nationality, not ethnicity, and teach our upcoming generations to be proud of their national identity instead of ethnic background.FARAH IQBAL Karachi
