Sir: The Ministry of Commerce has finalised a negative list of items that are not importable from India. While going through the list, it is quite evident that the same has been prepared as per the demands of strong lobbies, ignoring ground realities. The item Expanded Polyethylene rolls, sheets, strips (PCT No: 3921.1900) and precut wads (PCT No: 3923.5000) is on the negative list, though the same is not produced locally and the entire requirement is met by imports. The matter was raised with the Ministry of Commerce, TDAP, FPCCI and KCCI, before finalisation of the negative list, but in vain. Can any of the above institutions justify this decision? It is a million dollar question. SHIRAZ A BATADA Karachi
