Sir: Perhaps the day is not far when Karachi would be known for its crime rate. The intensity with which street crimes, particularly the incidence of cell phone snatching, is rising in Karachi, the life of an ordinary student like me has become hell. Many people have even lost their lives over a petty sum only because they resisted the theft. Unfortunately, so far the government has been mum over this issue. Certain areas, such as Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Street 13 D, Water Pump Street, University Road and Main North Nazimabad Raod are notorious for being hubs of cell phone snatching. Most of the time, the victims are students walking toward schools and colleges, located in dozens on the above-cited roads. For the fear of getting hurt, these young and innocent victims quietly hand over their cell phones, making life easier for the thugs. Reportedly, there are organised gangs of cell phone snatchers operating in Karachi. It is high time that the law enforcement agencies become efficient and root out these evil elements from Karachi. I believe that unless punishment of a severe order is administered to these criminals, street crimes or for that matter any crime would not be eliminated at all. HASSAN KHAN Karachi
