Sir: On May 1, while shopping, I saw a labourer sleeping on the roadside. Fearing that he might be overrun by a passing vehicle, I shouted at him and asked him why he was risking his life. He replied that he had to feed a family of six and was without any work. He was upset about not being able to provide for the basic sustenance of his family. There have been myriad labour days in the past. Leaders from all walks of life promise and sign memorandums to uplift the life of an ordinary person, but life goes on for them without any real, tangible difference ever. SAMAN SHAHID Karachi
