Sir: The criminal act of throwing acid on the faces of others (especially women) has risen greatly in Pakistan in the last few years. To be honest, it is too big to be rated as just another crime. It is, in fact, more sinful than committing murder. Lack of education is the root cause of such attacks. Most of the men here believe that they have greater rights over women, but fail to understand that no one has a right to carry out this evil act. After watching the Oscar winning documentary Saving Face, one can believe that it is possible to fight against acid attacks. Apart from imprisonment, there are several ways to overcome this social evil. This is not to say that a legal punishment is an unsuitable way, but I, being a young Pakistani believe that the acid attackers can be treated socially, morally, and ethically. The social method is to have a total social boycott of the perpetrator. This would provide them with a chance to think that they have carried out a most abhorrent act, and that there is no space for them in society. The ethical way is to have psychological counselling camps. This would be quite helpful in decreasing the rate of acid attacks. It would awaken a sense of guilt in the perpetrators and would teach others to never think of destroying the faces of others. This would really be helpful, apart from legal punishment, to erase the words ‘acid attacks’ from my beloved country. M IBRAHIM TARIQ Lahore
