Sir: Our Defence Minister, Ahmed Mukhtar, on the first anniversary of Osama bin Laden’s death came out with a startling disclosure that Pakistan was part of the operation conducted by the US Navy Seals in Abbottabad in which bin Laden was shot dead, as per the claim made by the US. The government and people of Pakistan were criticising the US government for violating our sovereignty while our own defence minister is unravelling secrets after one year. Does he know what the repercussions of his statement would be? With his statement, the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan can increase bombings and suicide attacks in Pakistan.President Asif Ali Zardari ordered the operation in Lyari against criminal elements. Tall claims were made by SSP CID, Chaudhry Aslam on the third day of the operation that 80 percent of the area had been cleared and occupied by the Karachi police. Seven days later, when the Karachi police continuously received rocket fire from criminals in Lyari, Rehman Baba (interior minister Rehman Malik) was sent to Karachi from Islamabad and he ordered suspension of the operation for two days. While briefing the media, Malik said that the media was giving undue coverage to Uzair Baloch, Zafar Baloch and Habib Jan Baloch. Rehman Malik claimed that he had sent ‘his men’ disguised as media persons to trace Uzair Baloch. This irresponsible statement of our interior minister can put the lives of our television journalists at risk. People like Uzair, Zafar and Habib Baloch, who are resisting police attacks in Lyari, will never trust any media persons in future and the truth will never reach the public. At the same time, journalists might be taken hostage on suspicion of being police informers. As they say, “It is better to remain silent at the risk of being thought a fool, than to talk and remove all doubts about it.”M RAFIQUE ZAKARIAKarachi
