Sir: A major reason for failure of or delay in justice is the antiquated, intricate, tedious and bulky laws, especially major procedural ones like the Civil Procedure Code, the Criminal Procedure Code and the Evidence Act. All of these being well over 100 years old and a legacy of the Raj have lost whatever usefulness they might have once possessed. The supposedly improved version of the Evidence Act of 1872, viz the Qanoon-e-Shahadat Act, is in fact retrograde and useless. The need is for a drastic revision of these laws as, according to a lawyer, a legal case is a contest to decide which side has the better lawyer. The jibe, of course, is at a legal system that allows legal jugglery to triumph over merit. The law is open to all, like the Ritz Hotel! Simplified laws will not only aid justice but will also provide access to justice to those who at present cannot afford the expense. SARDAR AKRAMULLAH Karachi
