Sir: Most of our ignorant politicians and parliamentarians do not know the origin of ‘gate’, which is being used by our electronic media to run shows involving corruption and scandals of ministers, ambassadors and business tycoons. In fact, the word ‘gate’ is indebted to the American president Richard Nixon for his infamous Watergate scandal, resulting in his near impeachment and eventual resignation in 1974 (the only instance in US history). But strangely, no such casualty occurred here in Pakistan in spite of more than half a dozen ‘gates’, starting from the NRO gate to Arsalan gate, while everybody involved remains safe and sound. In fact, the ‘heroes’ of the Raymond Davis gate and Rehman Malik’s red passport gate also survived somehow or the other. Sometimes, a federal minister becomes an advisor and sometimes an American spy contractor returns safely to his homeland. It is my sincere advice to the electronic media to desist from coining any new gates. One fine morning, some Younus Habib will come out of the dark and reveal the names of those smart anchors who availed Hajj and umrah tickets for themselves and their families, who got multiple entry visas for the US and the UK, who got the latest Toyota models, and who were time and again loaded into the prime minister’s plane on foreign visits in return for keeping their mouths shut. That will be the last day of the ‘gates’ business in Pakistan. MOHAMMAD IQBAL Karachi
