Sir: A few days ago, one of my professors of the FC University lost both his mobile phones. Later, a 12-year-old boy was caught red-handed while stealing a third mobile. While he must have been handed over to the police, what my professor did is an exemplary lesson for those who always cry over the mounting crime rate. The professor did not go to a police station to have him put behind bars, but took him to a school, got him enrolled there and took the responsibility for his educational expenses. The professor’s response shows we must remove the factors that cause crimes rather than directly remove crimes by awarding punishment to criminals. In fact, sometimes, punishment produces more criminals, instead of acting as a deterrent. MUHAMMAD HARIS ABRAR Lahore
