Sir: The Indus delta is internationally recognised as a Ramsar site and the government is internationally bound to protect it. However, for the last 22 years, the Pakistan government has been reluctant to take its responsibility seriously with the result that the delta is actually starved of water now. The ruination of the Indus delta has resulted in a mass migration of people, poverty, sea intrusion inundating 2.7 million acres of land in Thatta and Badin districts, and leaving 2.6 million people living in an area stretching from Kotri to the Arabian Sea in Sindh to die in hunger and thirst, and environmental degradation. It is sad to note that Punjab is opposing the release of water downstream Kotri despite all parties agreeing to it in the Water Accord 1991. It is no justification to say that water is not available in the system. This water is mandatory in order to save the Indus delta and the lives of 2.6 million people. I appeal to the UN and the member countries of Ramsar sites to come forward and play their role in saving Ramsar sites like the Indus delta and pressurise the Pakistan government to save the delta by releasing immediately the required water as envisaged in the Water Accord.
