Sir: This is to highlight two issues regarding the public health sector of the country. First, the various protests being carried out by the paramedics and nursing staff of NICH are undoubtedly valid, as they have issues that need to be addressed urgently. Nonetheless, there should be a realisation for the necessity to remain peaceful. The doctors’ refusal to admit ailing children with the excuse that the nurses are on strike will definitely not help their cause in any way. Rather, it may result in a pile of lawsuits filed against the concerned authorities. Second, sadly our society remains ignorant of the fact that when a person is ill, a doctor needs to be consulted, regardless of the severity of the illness. I fail to understand why they wait for the condition to worsen before consulting a specialist, when they are treated in government hospitals free. DR MOBEENA IHSAN Karachi
