Sir: The prevailing trend of intolerance and impatience has engulfed another innocent life in the city of lights. The heart touching story of the murder 19-year-old Shahzeb Khan still had to be forgotten when there came the ‘breaking news’ of the death of Hamza Ahmed, another victim of intolerance. It is condemnable that Pakistani society is becoming an example of intolerance. A small matter, because of our attitude, becomes a large issue and leads to serious fights and murder as well. No one is ready to compromise or to forgive the other person; anyone even slightly stronger than their opponent will deem it necessary to avenge themselves. This was the case of Shahzeb and now of Hamza Ahmed. The young boy was killed by the guard man of another boy belonging to an elite family. Both had a little fight, Ahmed slapped the other boy and, out of extreme anger, he avenged himself by ordering his guard to shoot Ahmed. The guard obeyed. What a society and what a story. Well-off people have provided their children with guns or have equipped guards and allowed them to take the lives of any one they want. This situation in our society holds responsible all its members including parents, teachers, rulers — everyone. We are all responsible for creating a healthy environment in society by our healthy attitudes. It is hoped that we, especially the younger generation of Pakistan, learns a lesson from these incidents and learns to be tolerant so that they all become beneficial citizens for their fellow countrymen.
