Sir: It is sad to see the increasing frequency of target killings in Karachi every single day. The people who die in target killings are common motor mechanics, labourers, masons, workers, pedestrians and many other innocent people. The sad reality is that they had nothing do with any of the hidden agendas of the perpetrators. Hundreds of people are being killed each year in the economic hub of the country but the authorities in Karachi and the police have failed to control these killings. It seems as if the police and Rangers have lost their confidence. The elections are about to take place and if Karachi continues to suffer from a bad law and order situation then no elections can be held in a safe atmosphere. We cannot even imagine how many people could be soft targets on polling day. The government is not taking any action; it is just quiet. It seems as if the government is blind to the needs and agonies of the people. It would help if government officials spoke to those families that have lost their relatives and loved ones. I wish for these target killings to be brought to a halt soon and that the government takes action against these horrid crimes. ZOYA RAHIM Karachi
