Sir: Traffic jams remain a major problem in Karachi. This menace affects our lives in many ways. However, during Ramzan, the situation got so out of control that people were forced to break their fast on the roads. This problem is rapidly growing in Karachi and we Karachiites, to some extent, have accepted this and are trying to live with it. The government seems to be stagnant and is unable to come up with any solutions. It does not even seem to want to find a cause. However, the government is not all to blame; we also criticise traffic wardens for taking their duty lightly, instead of looking at ourselves.
In my opinion, a major reason for these traffic jams are vehicles parked in no parking zones. If we observe areas like Saddar, we see many vehicles parked on the roadside and, in the worst-case scenario, on the footpaths. No one seems to realise the intensity of problems that these vehicles cause. The traffic police wardens turn a blind eye as they cannot monitor traffic during rush hours. It is time we take responsibility and try to improve the situation ourselves. If we only avoid parking vehicles in no parking zones it will help the flow of traffic immensely, resulting in lesser traffic jams. God helps those who help themselves.
