Death to the rapists

Sir: Four of the rapists accused in the heinous rape of a young female student on a Delhi bus in December last year have been sentenced to death by hanging. This is a tremendous verdict and a huge step in the right direction for India, which has been battling a warped patriarchal mindset that sees women as little more than sex objects. After all, Delhi is known as the world’s rape capital. Finally, justice will be served in this case but there is still a long way to go. Women are raped in India by the dozens every week, with Delhi being a notorious place after the sun sets when women do not dare to venture out of their homes. It will take a lot more than one verdict and one rape case to change all this. It is imperative that, from this moment on, no case of sexual assault be taken lightly in the country, otherwise this landmark case would have all been in vain.
