Sir: We live in a state where every new dawn brings new surprises and a unique kind of amusement, often in the form of political parties wrangling amongst themselves over issues that are hardly important instead of concluding with a solution for the menace of terrorism or the continuous increase in the prices of essential items. The latest gift from our government is the raising of the electricity tariff despite the fact that fuel prices in the international market have been decreasing. This has made the lives of common men and women even more miserable. According to the notification issued by the government, consumers utilising up to 200 units would be exempted from this increase. The notification tells of a Rs 5.89 per unit increase for domestic consumers using power from 201 to 300 units. Now they will have to pay Rs 14 per unit instead of Rs 8.11. Is this justified?
