Another drama in the name of accountability

Sir: Another drama of so-called accountability is ready to be staged. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has announced reopening the cases of former president Asif Ali Zardari. The masses of Pakistan have become bored and sick of all this. Musharraf’s handpicked men tried to fool the people for decades. The façade of accountability turns into a tragedy for the masses because millions and billions are spent on the salaries of the NAB staff. Millions are also spent on advertisements. Public and media attention is diverted from other core issues. The corrupt indulge in more corruption by plundering the national kitty to spend on exorbitant fees and other underhand practices. Courts also jump in, pleading that NAB is not doing its job correctly, and thus the time and resources of our courts are also wasted.

The Nawaz government is not serious about accountability. Consider Asif Zardari’s extravagant farewell gathering. Zardari did not lag behind and reciprocated by declaring to his partymen to observe a political ceasefire. Thus, there remains no modicum of doubt that any outcome will come from the farce of so-called accountability. Moreover, this mockery of accountability will benefit both the government and opposition. The PML-N will emerge celebrating that it launched an impartial accountability drive and the PPP will emerge as a victim of politically motivated tyranny by the man who received his nourishment under dictator Ziaul Haq. At the end of the day, the PPP will get its turn to rule over the wretched of the earth called the Pakistani nation and the PML-N will also get some share in ruling and fleecing the unfortunate people of Pakistan.
