Women’s woes and public transport

Sir: Local public transport needs the serious attention of the concerned authorities. It has become a nuisance for girls and women who are using it to reach their schools, colleges and offices. A sense of insecurity and harassment prevails amongst females while travelling. One can see the men travelling in female compartments of the buses, despite the fact that the allocated space for women is not sufficient for them. Journeys on local transport have become painful because of the men’s gestures and staring, and the uncivilised behaviour of drivers and conductors. Men try to touch the females through the grill partitions and while walking through the women’s compartment to go to the men’s compartment. They sometimes take pictures of females with their mobile phones.

The recent Anti-Harassment Act is meant to provide support to females and its strict implementation should be ensured. We should all raise our voice to bring an end to such uncivilised behaviour. The concerned authorities should take notice of this issue and ensure the allotment of more space for women in public transport vehicles.
