Sir: It gives me great pain when I walk through the streets of the biggest city in Pakistan and see that there is no cleanliness. Karachi, which was once known as the city of lights and happiness, is now home to various kinds of viruses and diseases like typhoid. These have spread due to poor hygienic conditions. Innocent children are the victims. The Karachi Development Authority (KDA) is doing nothing to address this problem. There is a lack of checks and balances in the system of KDA due to which most of the staff gets a monthly salary without completing their work.
The other problem is that of the open manholes found in various streets and markets of Karachi. They pose a threat to the lives of the people. They represent a grave danger at nighttime when even some of the streetlights do not work. I also strongly believe that maintaining a hygienic environment may be the responsibility of the government but we as citizens of this city should also take some responsibility. We should do some volunteer work to solve this problem and avoid it in the future. If we sit tight and keep blaming the government for not doing anything then there will be no solution at all. We should start from our home and slowly move on to the streets to eradicate all filth and mess and make our city clean.
