Sir: It has been more than four years now since the restoration of the judiciary in March 2009. I am sad to say that I see no major change in society before and after this reinstatement, despite all our expectations and hopes from the judiciary. There are many reasons behind this sorry situation. One cause, which really is out of the honourable judges’ hands, is the fact that there is heavy influence and pressure on the judiciary for certain cases such as Musharraf’s case and Benazir Bhutto’s murder case. Another reason is the fact that the court, in its efforts to aid the citizens, has been issuing too many contempt and suo motu notices, diminishing their importance. This results in the government not paying any heed to these notices, failing to implement the decisions of the court. The third reason is that court cases are just too expensive and are out of the reach of poor people. Most cases are postponed indeterminably, sometimes for generations.
These reasons have made the reinstatement of the judiciary an unexceptional event. It is hoped that the honourable courts are able to bring justice back to the fore by addressing these issues.
