Sir: The recent appointment of some 900 teaching assistants in the Higher Education Department, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, carried out by the PTI provincial government, is a laudable and appreciable step in all possible words. The appointments were made after a tough screening process. It is a move to engage the highly qualified candidates and to mitigate their difficulties. It is one of the few bold decisions by the provincial government along with the establishment of an Independent Monitoring Unit (IMU) in the education and health sectors. But, at the same time, these appointments are incomplete in their terms. Some of the clauses have created uncertainty among all the selected teaching assistants. The prevailing threats include their termination from service at any time of the arrival of the permanent selectees and no provision of salaries in the long summer vacations. It is indeed awful that their future will be at constant risk all the time. They will not be able to claim age relaxation. It is high time that the government take the following remedial measures in order to lessen the grievances and reservations of all the selected yet endangered teaching assistants. First, they should be given job security at all costs. Second, they should be given a proper BPS (17), which should at least be of a contract lecturer. Third, there should be a provision of salaries to them in the long summer vacations. It is hoped that the government will pay heed to these justified demands and will consider the issues seriously, which would undoubtedly win them good name and fame. IMTIAZ AHMADMardan
