KABUL: An Afghan member of parliament and others were wounded when a roadside bomb struck his vehicle on Wednesday, the latest in a series of attacks on the country’s lawmakers. MP Fakuri Behisti of the Bamiyan province was on his way to parliament when a bomb went off which almost completely destroyed his vehicle. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack as yet. A spokesman for the Interior Ministry said, “The bomb was placed under a bridge and it detonated when the MP’s vehicle was passing through. Three people including the MP were wounded.” However, Afghan National Assembly Speaker Abdul Raouf Ibrahimi told other lawmakers that a relative of the MP had been killed. A bakery owner present at the scene of the blast said, “I heard a big explosion that shook nearby shops. I saw rescuers pulling out several wounded people from the destroyed vehicle.” Taliban insurgents have recently begun a nationwide offensive at a time in the season when the fighting is usually at a low, with numerous attacks targeting legislators having occurred.
