SRINAGAR: Avalanches hit an army post killing six Indian soldiers along the Line of Control (LoC), the Indian Army said on Thursday. According to an Indian Army spokesman, avalanches put an army camp under tonnes of snow in the remote Gurez area on Wednesday. Colonel Rajesh Kalia said that despite the hostile weather, six soldiers and an officer have been rescued. Another avalanche, also on Wednesday, buried an army patrol that was approaching a post in the same area. “Coordinated rescue operations are in progress in which three bodies could be recovered so far,” the spokesman said. The ones missing their number were missing and were being ascertained. An avalanche also hit a house in the same area causing the death of four members of a single family on Wednesday when they were sleeping. A lone survivor was rescued. Meteorologists have forecasted more heavy snow across the territory over the next two days. Authorities had already issued avalanche warnings, advising residents in mountainous areas not to venture out.
