MELBOURNE: Four people, including a young child, have died after a car plowed into pedestrians in central Melbourne. Police officials informed media that at least 29 people were injured, including a baby who was reportedly in a critical condition. Police say they rammed the car and shot the driver in the arm before arresting him. Police have said that the incident was not terror related, but was suspected to be linked to a stabbing in the south east of Melbourne on Friday. The incident occurred in Bourke St Mall, a busy shopping area, just before 2:00 PM local time. Footage broadcast on local media captured moments before the incident showed a maroon car driving in circles, with the driver leaning out of the window. A witness informed media that she saw pedestrians desperately trying to get out of the way as the car drove on a footpath. The witness said, “The car hit a few people standing outside their offices and sent them flying into the air.” Another witness estimated the car to be travelling at 60km/h (37 mph). Witnesses also described how the police rammed into the car, surrounded it, and fired into the car. A witness said, “They (the police) dragged someone out via the passenger side, then all 10 of them sat on top of him.” Police said that the driver of the car earlier took a woman hostage. He later released her before driving to the city centre and rammed into pedestrians. Police also informed media that the man has a long history of family violence, drug issues and mental health problems. He was also charged at the weekend in relation to an assault. The four people who died have not been identified, but police say that among them were a man and woman in their 30s and a young child. The baby who was injured was three months old. Also among the injured was a two-year-old who is reported to be in a serious condition.
