WASHINGTON: President of US Barak Obama congratulated a Pakistani-American doctor Humayun on receiving the national medal in field of technology and innovation. The 53 years old Humayun is the grandson of Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s very own personal physician. Humayun received the National medal of technology and innovation for the development, invention and application of bioelectronics in medicine. His achievements include a retinal prosthesis that restores the lost vision of a blind person. His grandfather Colonel Ilahi Bakhsh had migrated to Pakistan from Jalandhar after Pak-Hind partition. He was the personal physician of founder of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah. The family then moved to America in 1972 when Humayun was only 9 years old. Humayun is the co-inventor of Argus series retina implants that are designed to restore the lost vision of blind and the first ophthalmologist ever to be elected as a member of both US national academies of engineering and medicine. While addressing at the White house function, Mr. Obama told that this invention of Mr. Humayun was inspired by his grandmother’s illness. Mr. Obama said, “When his diabetic grandmother lost her vision, he began studying to become an ophthalmologist, hoping he could save the sight of others. “Mark helped create the ‘Argus II’, a ‘bionic eye’ that has restored vision to patients who’ve been blind for up to 50 years.” “He says the moment when he witnessed someone seeing light and shapes, someone experiencing the miracle of sight for the first time in decades — those moments have been some of the happiest and most rewarding of his professional career. In his words — and I think no pun is intended —“There wasn’t a dry eye in the operating room,” Mr. Obama said.
