LAHORE: Shabbir Iqbal of Islamabad, showing his golfing prowess and technical might, won the three rounds 18th Allama Iqbal Open Golf Championship which concluded at Garrison Club Golf Course in Sialkot on Monday. Shabbir managed to attain this honour through consistent excellence as he compiled a score of 205, eleven under par through rounds of 68 on the first day, 74 on the second day and an incredible round of 63 on the concluding day which made him impregnable. His nearest rivals Amjad Yousaf (Karachi Golf Club) and Talib Hussain (CDA) did put up a great fight by playing superbly, but these champions could not press their way to victory and had to be content with positions other than the first. In the end, Amjad Yousaf and Talib Hussain finished as runners up with a similar aggregate three rounds score of 209, seven under par. Other golf professionals who produced golfing rounds of quality were Talat Ijaz (Gymkhana) 211 four under par, Shahid Javed Khan (Gymkhana) 212 four under par, Muhammad Nazir (Islamabad) 213 three under par and Matloob Ahmed (Lahore Garrison) 213 three under par. In the race for honours in the amateur section, the names of the leading performers were Raja Muhammad Israr (Margalla Golf Club), Ashiq Hussain (Multan) and Ahmed Baig (Lahore Garrison). The competition for amateurs was over two rounds and Raja came first with a gross score of 146 over the two rounds. Ashiq Hussain came second and his gross score was 147 while Ahmed Baig ended up third at a gross score of 148. In the team event, Multan, comprising of Ashiq Hussain, Mohammad Mushtaq, Abdul Zahoor and Mohammed Naveed, came first. Women’s first gross was won by Ana James Gill of Royal Palm and first net was picked up by Zaib un Nisa also of Royal Palm.
