LONDON: Tennis icon Venus Williams has been fined $7,500 by tournament supervisors for skipping a mandatory press conference on Friday. The 37-year-old, who reached Wimbledon women’s singles final after defeating Johanna Konta (6-4, 6-2) on Tuesday, was handed the fine after she did not appear for a post match interview consequent to her quarter-final victory, although she did attend the press conference after beating Konta. This is not the first time Williams has been punished for failing to appear for interviews. In 2016 Australian Open, the United States (US) national was handed $5,000 fine for skipping a press conference following a first-round loss. The 5-times singles champion will face Spain’s Garbine Muguruza in the final on Saturday.
