LAHORE: The golfing hopefuls from all over Pakistan have assembled at the Lahore Gymkhana Club Golf Course to seek honours in the All Pakistan Quaid-e-Azam Amateur Golf Championship starting on Friday (today) The championship carries the name of the father of the nation and hence all efforts have been made to give it a touch of glory and prestige Many big names of the golf scene are at the golf playing arena of the historic Lahore Gymkhana and champions like Asif Mehdi, Imran Ahmed, Javed A Khan, Tariq Mehmood, Fakhar Imam, Wazir Ali, Ahmed Baig, Muhammad Rehman, Muhammad Saqib, Nadeem Aslam and Mohsen Zafar hope to tick under par scores and be a part of the glory. For youngsters like Ahmed Baig, Muhammad Saqib, Nadeem Aslam and Zunair Aleem, a victory in the championship is on top of their wish-list and if they can succeed in lifting the prestigious title, it will be an ample reward for their efforts and the consistent hard work they have put in. On the first day, a total of 52 seniors will compete for honours. They will contest for success over 18 holes and the competition is expected to be razor sharp as many of the seniors belong to the category of players who were champions in their younger days. Even now, though they are over the age bracket of 55 years, their skills are still there and the only aspect that wears them down is nerves and related pressure of competition. But since that attribute is common to all, they still urge for recognition and huge success. In the women’s segment, a total of 18 players are striving for top positions. Ghazala Yasmin is there and hopes to make her presence felt with classy hitting and good and controlled putting on the greens. Her challengers are Tehmina Ahmed, Ana James Gill, Sameea Javed Ali and Shahzadi Gulfam. Amongst others, Zahida Durrani has the capacity to make a difference and so can young Suneya Osama and Minaa Zainab.
