KARACHI: Despite raids conducted by police and rangers in Karachi and the arrest of a large number of criminal and the registration of cases against them, street crime could not stopped in the port city. According to the year end report issued by police on Saturday, 15744 mobile phones were snatched from the citizens in Karachi in 2016, which is around 23 percent less than the previous year as 20486 cellular phones were taken away in 2015. “Police report shows a decrease in mobile snatching but it has in fact increased, as only those incidents are kept in record which are reported to police, many people do not report snatching or stealing of their cell phones,” said acting Inspector General (IG) Sindh Mushtaq Mahar. In most cases, only those people come to police who lose their expensive and latest phones, he added. According to sources, a reasonable amount of reduction has been seen in ransom and other crimes after Karachi operation. As a result, the criminals have started doing small crimes like robbery and stealing. However, police are claiming that they are developing mechanism to eliminate all petty crimes.
