KARACHI: On Saturday, Pakistan Fisher Folk staged a demonstration against influential people for taking control of their lakes. In the sweltering heat, a large number of fishermen gathered outside Karachi Press Club and chanted slogans against the influentials for grabbing “Kan Parao” and other lakes in Sindh. Leading the protest, the chairman of Pakistan Fisher Folk (PFF) Muhammad Ali Shah reported that Sindh Assembly had passed a resolution to restore all lakes, canals, and ponds of sweet water from the clutches of influential and feudals of the area. The government had announced the provision of licenses to fishermen. Despite this, more than 300 sweet waters and lakes are under the control of the local influentials. There has been no implementation on the announcements. He revealed that recently a local feudal, Allah Dinno Chandio, with the help of provincial minister of Fisheries department, Muhammad Ali Malkani, occupied the lake Alan Parao, located in Ladiyon, district of Sajawal. It causedhundreds of fishermen, who have been living there for centuries, to be out of employment. This is the only source of their income through which they live hand to mouth. They demanded Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to restore their rights by removing the concerned minister.
