KARACHI: PPP leader Senator Taj Haider has called for remodeling of Gujjar Nullah project in a letter written to Chief Minister (CM) Sindh Murad Shah. “The project of revamping/rehabilitation of Nullah by Government of Sindh would give new environmental friendly result besides rehabilitation of the displaced families from the site”, Haider wrote. Nullah is a 33.5 kilometers long drainage channel. Recently around 3,320 families were displaced during an anti-encroachment drive launched to removing silt from Nullah . Senator Haider has suggested steps for stopping encroachment on both banks of Nullah including green belts, 80 yards wide roads and 10 yards wide pathways on both sides of Nullah. He estimated that improvement of communication facilities, description, justification, technical, parameters and technical transfer aspects’ feasibility study for project would cost around Rs.300 million. The displaced population should be re-settled in government built flats within city area or outskirts of the city with a cash compensation of Rs 50,000 per family, Senator Haider suggested that provincial government can contribute its own funds in the project and recover investment by constructing 10 percent extra flats for auction. There already exists some large open space available on banks of Gujjar Nullah, where a sizeable number of 4/5 storey flats can be constructed in planned manner. Those residing on bank of Nullah in area adjacent to newly constructed flats should be given new flats and houses vacated by them for demolition and clearing space. Gujjar Nullah is a natural drainage channel which starts from North Karachi and falls into Lyari River near Mureed Goth. The length of Nullah is 44,400 feet, sides of main Nullah varies from 19 feet to 37 feet and passes through Godhra Camp, People Colony, Landi Kotal Chowrangi, Musa Colony, crossing Altaf Hussain Berailvi Road near Mureed Goth.
