KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister, Syed Murad Ali Shah has decided to overhaul education system in public sector by taking some revolutionary measures to improve teaching skills, making education totally free, developing quality curriculum and offering scholarship for girl students so that quality education could be provided. This he said while presiding over a meeting of Education Department to review overall performance of the department. The meeting was attended by Minister Education Jam Mehtab Dahar, Chief Secretary Rizwan Memon, Secretary Education Aziz Uqaili, Additional Secretary Education Nawaz Sohu, Abdul Wahab Soomro, and other concerned officers. Secretary Education Aziz Uqaili briefing the chief minister said that there were 11474 schools functioning without toilets, 13016 without drinking water, 1116 without boundary walls and 13158 without electricity. “In such a suffocating atmosphere how it is possible for a student to concentrate in his education,” he asked and said “This is very serious and must be addressed seriously”, CM commented. The chief minister said “If we succeed in developing our good education system by inducting well-trained teachers, introducing decent curriculum we would be able to eliminate terrorism, crime and other evils from the society without shedding blood. That was why he had declared educational emergency”. He directed Minister Education Jam Mehtab Dahar to personally go into districts and start constructing toilets and water tanks, including for drinking purposes on war footings. The Minister education told the chief minister that he has taken personal efforts and have opened 1759 schools all over Sindh where 55816 children have been enrolled so far. It may be noted that there are 351 schemes of 79.15 billion launched for development of education department. The government has allocated Rs13 billion this year. Out of 351 schemes, 140 are on-going and 211 are new. The chief minister said that he was also working hard to establish an state-of -art teachers training academy which produce genuinely trained teachers and then induct them in schools. It was pointed out that every year around 3000 teachers retire from service. The chief minister also decided to give scholarships to over 300,000 girl students all over Sindh at a rat of Rs2500 to Rs3500 every month. This must be made in a transparent manner so that the actual fruits of this scheme could be harvested by poor parents, girl students in completing their education and the government in improving literacy ratio.
