KARACHI: Human rights, labour rights, women rights, writer, journalists and civil society activists on Tuesday demanded to revive the spirit of Lahore Resolution by signing a new social contract for Pakistan in which deprived sections of the society must get their due share in parliament and resources. Addressing a joint press conference, at Arts Council of Pakistan, Karachi the civil society and rights activists said Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah had clearly provided an outline for a new country, but those were not followed by the successors, even after 70 years of Pakistan’s independence people are deprived of their fundamental rights. Ahmed Shah, President, Arts Council of Pakistan, Karachi; Karamat Ali, Executive Director, PILER; Habibuddin Junaidi, Coordinator, Sindh Labour Solidarity Committee; Mahnaz Rahman, Resident Director, Aurat Foundation; Maqtida Mansoor Khan, Columnist and Analysis; Nazim F Haji, businessmen/ concerned citizen; Ms. Naghma Iqtidar, social and political Activist; Dr. Ayoub Shaikh, Editor of Awami Awaz and civil society activist Umer Farooque spoke on the occasion. They pointed out that society is facing intolerance, religious extremism, division and these ills are increasing with the passage of time. Disparity in the society has increased which has resulted in widespread unrest in the society. “We are supporter of democracy and we will soon launch a People’s Manifesto, which would be shared with people in general and political parties in particular” said Ahmed Shah. Quoting the Lahore resolution of 23rd March 1940, Karamat Ali of PILER said though the Lahore resolution provided basis for establishment of Pakistan and we observe this day annually, current day affairs of the country are totally in contrast to the spirit of 23rd March resolution.
