KARACHI: The Sindh government has decided to give special powers to the Rangers for 90 days. The decision was made by a cabinet meeting under Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah on Saturday. The meeting was attended by provincial ministers, advisers and special assistants. Murad said earlier the CM used to take such decisions on his own, but the Sindh High Court has now interpreted the government as cabinet; therefore the extension of powers under ATA-1997 has been brought before the cabinet. Home Secretary Qazi Shahid Pervez briefed the cabinet about the powers. He said Rangers have been deployed in the province by the federal government on the requisition of the Sindh government under Article 147 of the constitution, lastly for the period of one year, from July 20, 2016 to July 19, 2017. For the purpose of operation, SOPs were notified by the Home Department on August 1, 2016 which prescribe the specific role for Rangers. The CM said the Rangers had done a successful operation against militant wings, extortionists, target killers and terrorists in Karachi. In the first phase the government successfully restored peace in the city by focusing on law and order and now reconstruction of the infrastructure of the city has been started. He praised the Rangers for its operation against militant wings and banned outfits. “Other agencies and police have also done remarkable work and I would say that it was a good team work which has produced congenial results.” Ministers, Nisar Khuhro, Hazar Khan Bijarani, Manzoor Wassan, Sardar Shah, Nasir Shah, Jam Mehtab and Ziaul Hassan Lanjar also praised the Rangers.
