KARACHI: University of Karachi acting VC Prof Dr Khalid Iraqi has said that the real motives of science should be aimed at safeguarding and upholding the human values and rights. He said the relations between different societies of the world could be made and maintained through science adding that science has revolutionised the human life and its credit goes to the scientists. Dr Iraqi said humanity is also endangered with the negative use of science by some unscrupulous individuals and it is hence the duty of all the stakeholders to be watchful in controlling the negative use of science. It appears that lack of coordination and a communication gap exists between natural sciences, social sciences and management sciences which must be bridged by our mutual efforts, he added. He said this while addressing the concluding ceremony of three-day International Workshop on “Management Aspects of Bio-safety and creating a culture of Bio-safety” organised by Pakistan Biological Safety Association in collaboration with Dr A Q Khan Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, University of Karachi and Fogarty International, National Institute of Health, USA at a local hotel. “Terrorism has posed a serious challenge to the entire world and Pakistan is also a victim of it. The most vital element to defeat terrorism and mischief is through education. Peace in any society is only possible when the society is willing to live in a peaceful environment. The great nations prosper when priority is given to education and research. Every individual has a role in the restoration of peace and countering terrorism in the society”, Dr Iraqi emphasised. University of Karachi Dr A Q Khan Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering Director General Prof Dr Abid Azhar welcomed the trainers, scientists and health professionals from different parts of the country and from overseas. Dr Azhar opined that the training workshops on such vital and sensitive issues are the need of the hour for the contemporary world. Tim Trevan from USA said that he keeps coming back to Pakistan as he cannot find the same enthusiasm to learn in other parts of the globe as he sees here. Phillipe Stroot, from Belgium echoed Trevan’s sentiments and said that he has visited Pakistan on several occasions against the security advice from several quarters. He said that he has now become one of the ambassadors of Pakistan for the west and carries fond memories every time he pays a visit to Pakistan. Now, the west is feeling the heat of the terrorism, Pakistan seems to be like a second home to him where he finds himself very safe, he added. Sean Kaufman from USA lauded the leadership quality of Pakistani academician in producing the highly motivated and competent persons in a very healthy environment prevailing in the institutions that he came across during this training workshop. Dr Ziba Rasmussen from NIH, USA explained the continuous efforts of her organisation is making in developing the awareness programmes for Pakistan in the vital area of Bio-safety and Bio-security. Thus, ensuring promotion of safe and responsible conduct of science and the scientists, she added. Dr Zulfiqar Naqvi, representing the Pakistan Biological Safety Association, thanked the resource persons, facilitators and participants from different parts of Pakistan and overseas.
