KARACHI: Though the banned militant outfit – Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan has claimed the responsibility of the targeted attack on the DSNG van on Samaa TV, the police on Monday registered a case against unidentified persons for attacking the DSNG van and killing an assistant cameraman of the channel. Taimoor Khan, 22, was shot dead when armed motorcyclists targeted a Digital Satellite News Gathering (DSNG) van near KDA Chowrangi in North Nazimabad when the Samaa Tv employees in their DSNG van were on their way for the news coverage of the cracker attack at police’s armored personnel carrier (APC) few distance away from the crime scene. Two separate special police teams headed by District Central SSP Muqaddas Haider and SP Samiullah Soomro have already been constituted by IGP Sindh Allah Dino Khowaja following the directives of the Sindh chief minister Syed Murad Ali Shah. The initial police investigation has suggested that at least four armed men on two motorcycles were behind the incident. DSP Naeem Khan said that the initial investigation suggests that a same group of militants was behind both the consecutive attacks who attacked the DSNG van after attacking the APC. Police investigators have also obtained the forensic report of the empty shells of the 9mm pistols used in the incident. “Two 9mm pistols were used in the attack. The empties we recovered from the crime scene has no previous history of being used in any criminal activity in Karachi,” said an officer of the forensic division of the Sindh police. His funeral prayers were offered at Bilal Masjid near to his residence in Orangi Town and later he was laid to rest at Paposh Nagar graveyard. People from different walks of life attended his funeral. The police have registered an FIR No. 28/17 under Sections 302 (murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code and 7 of the anti-terrorism act against unidentified persons on behalf of Samaa Tv employee, Syed Imtiaz Ali while further investigation was underway. Additional IG Karachi Mushtaq Mahar, however, has announced that anybody who provides information regarding the killing of Samaa TV cameraman will be awarded one million rupees and his identity will be kept confidential. In Karachi, attacks on media persons have become a routine matter. This was the fifth such incident to have taken place in Karachi, resulting in the death of the five media workers including three Express Media Group workers. Two suspected members of a banned religious outfit – Lashkar-e-Jhangvi were arrested on January 2016 for their alleged involvement in the targeted killings of three Express Media Group staffers in early 2014. On the other hand, journalists protested in front of Karachi Press Club against the brutal killing. The protest was organized by Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ). Chanting slogans, they demanded of government to arrest the killers and give compensation to victim family.
