KARACHI: On the 23rd convocation ceremony of Indus Valley School of Arts and Architecture (IVS), 93 students were awarded with bachelor’s degrees and diplomas, on Saturday. Convocation ceremony was attainted by successful students and their parents. 17 graduate were from the Architecture Department, 10 from Interior design, 23 students from Communication Design Department in Fine Arts, 15 were from Interior Design and 21 from Textile Design. 2 students completed a 3 years Diploma Course in Textile Design, and 15 students were from Fine Arts department. 5 Students received their diplomas in Digital Film and Video. It was the 23rd graduating class of the faculties of Design and Fine Art and 22nd graduating class of the faculty of Architecture. The successful student also displayed their work at campus. “Art is not only an occupation or a means of earning money but it is a bridge between communities and societies, which reflects thoughts, culture and history”, Samina Raees Khan, Executive Director of IVS said, while addressing the convocation’s ceremony . The students and artists, who have been associated with IVS will be the proud of society, and hopefully they will make positive changes. Professor Dr S Akbar Zaidi, a renowned researcher, said in his speech that Art deals with nature, human behavior and the entire world which is around us, an artist knows how to display artistic work, while art is a key of creating borne substances in society and individuals. “Students of Fine Art are incessantly exposed to social, cultural, political and technological context in contemporary art and IVS encourages students to formulate new insights through the use of various techniques and methodologies”, Adeela Suleman, Head of Fine Arts department, told Daily Time that the complexity of art in Pakistan has created a vibrant and challenging environment for young artists to step into but she looks forward that the step out graduates will successfully be contributing their skills to this landscape. However, the graduate students thought that they will work in a bright future since they have studied Arts by choice. “After a long break from schooling I decided to study art and the thrill of being a student again and being a part of an environment has inspired my work” Andleeba Akhtar, a graduate Student of Fine Art department told Daily Times, added that the student’s chairs was an essential part of her new ambience. Since she was in a lot of contact with it, she chose an object to research and study and started photographing chairs in various setting at IVS and other places which led her work to documenting chairs of all kinds. “My thesis is my past. It is about the time that I have spent with my family in Sukkur .Through in my work I aim to express the loss that my siblings and I have experienced because of sudden death of our parents in 2013 ,” Razin Rubin, a graduate student of Fine Arts said that since then he moved to Karachi, recalling the memories almost every day which made him realize that his everything was his parents, who once had them, also his thesis expresses the absence and loss of beloved one. IVS was founded by a group of architects, designers and artists, in 1989, which is a degree awarding institute while its main campus is situated in Clifton near Belwal House.
