KARACHI: Many students, who wanted to get admission into Government Degree Science and Commerce College Lyari (GDSCL), were denied of the opportunity on the ground of non-availability of space in the college, as there has been a considerable increase in the number of students in a post-operation scenario, Daily Times learnt on Wednesday. Before the Karachi operation, which was launched by Pakistan Rangers Sindh as part of National Action Plan (NAP), the gangsters in the area, where the college is located, had disturb the entire education process of the institution. But after the operations, since the paramilitary forces have mostly eliminated the criminals from Lyari, the youngsters have started returning to the sphere of education. But due to lack of space in the college, they are being deprived of their basic right . In the current academic year, 1150 students have been enrolled in GDSCL, which is the highest enrollment ratio during the last five years. Earlier, in the academic year of 2014-2015, only 750 Students were enrolled while their attendances was almost nill . However, in the current academic year of 2015-16, as the security situation in Lyari has been much improved, students from many other areas like Saddar town, Orangi town, Kemari town and SITE have also got themselves enrolled in the college. The sudden enrollment rush to the college has forced the GDSCL’s administration to refuse admission to a large number of students. There are 35 sanctioned posts for teachers, but Education & Literacy Department (ELD) has deployed only 15 teachers in the college for its three faculties of Science, Commerce, and Computer Science (CS). Surprisingly, the CS faculty is running without teachers and the computer lab even though around 50 students have been enrolled in the faculty. “We have been requesting the authorities of ELD to provide us with teachers for the last four years , but authorities have not appointed a single teacher in the college for the “teacher-less” faculty and other required staff as well,” Prof. Safdar Ali Mangi, Principal of the GDSCL said. Students are forced to join coaching centers, as there is no teacher in the faculty while teachers collect money on the basis of self service, from community and sometimes they even contribute their own earnings at the end of year to prepare CS Faculty’s Students for examination, he added. The students are enthusiastically coming to the college to acquire knowledge but are discouraged by the situation at the institute. “The management of GDSCL has also imposed restrictions on political activities and the creation of ethnic organizations. They are not allowed to set up stalls in premises of the college. Similarly, wall chalking, hoisting of flags of political parties and other activities are also not allowed, just because of the reason that students should focus on their studies”, told Prof. Shakil Ahmed, senior faculty member. In those times when gang war was active in Lyari, student of the locality feared insecure and avoided attending the college, while parents of the student were also not willing to enroll their children in GDSCL. As a result, majority of the students had left the college and some of them got associated with criminal groups, he added. However, ongoing crackdown against those gangsters has changed the situation of Lyari and now students and teachers are coming to the college regularly and punctually. GDSCL is the first college of the city, where students perform assembly on daily basis, he added. Established in 1972 and inaugurated by former Sindh’s Chief Minister Mumtaz Ali Bhutto, GDSCL is one of the oldest colleges of Lyari Town. Its new Building is located near Chakiwara Police Station, Singo lane, Lyari town.
