KARACHI: The Karachi Development Authority (KDA) has requested the Sindh Government to allocate 12,500 acres of land on Super Highway and in Deh Lal Bhakar to development of two low cost housing schemes. The Director General, KDA, Nasir Abbas in separate letters to the Board of Revenue (BOR), Sindh and the Secretary, Local Government have sent the request urging the government to keep the value of the land low, so that people, who are in need of houses, could buy a plot in the new schemes at low prices. KDA is planning to uplift Karachi’s infrastructure and through these two housing schemes, and it would also benefit the BOR to generate revenue. Besides, KDA is considering people’s long standing demand to serve them with low cost housing in the schemes, numbers, 46 and 47, that are affordable for them, the letter stated. Chief Engineer, KDA, Asadullah Shah talking to Daily Times said that the KDA was also planning for the development of commercial and industrial plots on these schemes, which would also cater to the needs of KDA’s employees, besides serving people from lower income group. Out of proposed land of 12,500 acres, 2,500 acres will benefit the dwellers of several goths and katchi settlements in Deh Lal Bhakar, near Northern Bypass, as they will be able to buy a house at very low price in the schemes. Rest of the 10,000 acres of land is lying barren near Bharia Town, along with Super Highway and Super Highway Link Road, “We will be using this piece of land for housing purpose”, he said. In 45 different KDA’s housing schemes in Karachi, around 800,000 allottees are living by building their homes, he added. As per mandate/obligation rules, function and responsibilities of KDA, as enshrined in KDA’s Charter 1957, all mega project schemes are to be executed by the KDA, irrespective of location or jurisdiction, all over the city.
