KARACHI: The Sindh High Court has reserved its verdict on a petition of former Sindh chief secretary challenging the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) investigation into his alleged involvement in illegal allotment and regularization of land. A two-judge bench, headed by Justice Muhammad Junaid Ghaffar, reserved the verdict after hearing final arguments from the lawyers representing NAB and the petitioner. The NAB’s lawyer informed that former chief secretary Muhammad Siddique Memon was charges of illegally allotting six acres of government land at throw away prices. The investigation against him was completed and awaiting the NAB chairman’s approval for filing a reference in an accountability court, he added. The petitioner’s counsel submitted that Memon was summoned by the NAB officials for interrogation in connection with an inquiry into alleged illegal allotment and regularization of six acres of land in the city’s Scheme 33 in 1992. His client had not allotted the land individually but he was a member of a land committee that allotted the land and the land in question had already been surrendered to the government, he added. Since the land was in the government’s possession and no damage was caused to the national exchequer, yet the NAB was proceeding with the matter, he contended. He said that the bureau had converted the inquiry into investigation and pleaded the court to order quashment of the investigation against him.
